It’s one of the first things people ask, and while every case is different, here’s a realistic picture. Most orthodontic treatment takes about 12 to 24 months. Simple corrections — a bit of front-tooth crowding or a small gap — can sometimes be done in as little as 6 months, while complex bite problems can take two years or more.
What determines the length:
- How much movement is needed. Minor tweaks are quick; significant crowding or bite correction takes longer.
- The method. Straightforward cases with aligners or braces move at a similar pace; some complex movements are faster with fixed braces.
- Your age. Teeth often move a little faster in younger patients, as adult bone is denser — adult treatment can take somewhat longer.
- Your cooperation. This one’s in your hands: wearing clear aligners 20–22 hours a day, wearing elastics as instructed, keeping appointments and looking after your braces all keep treatment on schedule. Not doing so is the most common reason treatment drags on.
