Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment (RCT) saves a tooth whose soft inner pulp — the living part holding nerves and blood vessels — has become infected from deep decay, cracks, or a failed filling. We remove the damaged tissue, clean and seal the space, then protect the tooth with a crown.

When it’s needed

• Severe or persistent tooth pain, especially at night or after hot/cold food
• Lingering sensitivity to temperature
• Swelling or a pus-filled bump on the gum
• A deep cavity reaching the nerve, or a cracked/darkened tooth
• Pain while chewing or biting

The treatment

• X-ray to assess the roots and infection
• Local anaesthetic, then a rubber dam to keep the tooth clean and dry
• Infected pulp removed; canals cleaned and shaped with advanced instruments
• Canals sealed with a biocompatible filling
• A crown fitted at a follow-up visit for strength and protection

Aftercare

Mild soreness for a day or two is normal and settles with ordinary painkillers. Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing on that side until the final restoration is placed. Most cases finish in one to two visits.

Common questions

Does it hurt? No — the tooth is fully numbed first. The pain of the infection is usually far worse than the treatment.
Is a crown necessary? For back teeth, yes — they take heavy chewing forces. Some front teeth need only a filling.
How long does it last? With good care and a crown, a treated tooth can last a lifetime.
