What is gingivitis and can it be reversed?

Gingivitis gum inflammation explained by dentist at The White Dental Practice, your 'dental clinic near me', in Mankapur Nagpur

In short: Gingivitis is the early, mild stage of gum disease — red, puffy gums that bleed easily, caused by plaque along the gumline. The good news: it’s completely reversible with thorough daily cleaning and a professional scaling, before it can progress to the more serious periodontitis.

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, and it’s the earliest stage of gum disease. It happens when plaque — a sticky film of bacteria — is left to build up along the gumline. The bacteria irritate the gum tissue, making it red, swollen and tender, and prone to bleeding when you brush or floss. Bad breath is another common sign.

The most important thing to understand is that gingivitis, at this stage, causes no permanent damage to the bone or the fibres holding your teeth in place. That’s what makes it fully reversible. Remove the cause — the plaque and hardened tartar — and the gums heal back to health, usually within a couple of weeks.

Reversing it takes two things working together:

  • Thorough home care — brushing twice a day at the gumline with a soft brush, and cleaning between the teeth daily. This clears the soft plaque before it hardens.
  • A professional cleaning (scaling) — to remove the hardened tartar that brushing alone can’t shift, especially below the gumline.

If gingivitis is ignored, it can advance to periodontitis, where the infection spreads deeper and starts destroying the bone — and that damage is not reversible. So catching and treating it early genuinely matters.

If your gums are red, puffy or bleed when you brush, a simple gum treatment and cleaning will usually turn it around quickly.
