In short: Before starting treatment, ask what the problem is and why this treatment is needed, what the alternatives are (including doing nothing), how much it costs and what’s included, what the risks and recovery are, how long it lasts, and whether a second opinion is welcome. A good dentist will happily answer all of these.
Being informed helps you make confident decisions and avoid surprises. Before agreeing to any significant dental treatment, it’s completely reasonable to ask:
- What exactly is the problem, and what happens if I don’t treat it? Understanding the diagnosis and the consequences of waiting.
- Why is this treatment recommended, and what are the alternatives? Most problems have more than one option — ask about each, including a more conservative or lower-cost one.
- What does it cost, and what’s included? Get the full, itemised price upfront — including any follow-ups, crowns or lab fees.
- What are the risks and possible complications?
- What’s involved, and how long is the recovery? Number of visits, anaesthetic, aftercare, time off if any.
- How long will the result last, and how do I look after it?
- Are payment or instalment options available?
- Can I take time to think, or get a second opinion? A trustworthy dentist will always say yes.
Asking these isn’t being difficult — a good dentist welcomes them, because an informed patient makes better decisions and is happier with the outcome. If a clinic is reluctant to answer or pressures you to decide on the spot, that’s a red flag.
At The White Dental Practice we encourage questions and offer a free second opinion on any treatment plan. Book a consultation and ask us anything.
